Let's Discuss: Mezco One:12 Collective: The Amazing Spider-Man Action Figure.

Hey there, yeah, I know this guy has been out for a while. I passed on him before but when figures like this go on sale for awesome prices, well... sometimes you just have to go for it. As you've guessed, we are (finally) taking a look at the Mezco One:12 Collective: The Amazing Spider-Man action figure.

The Amazing Spider-Man action figure is a highly detailed and feature-packed representation of the iconic web-slinger. Based on the Steve Ditko design and featuring equipment from the wall crawler's early appearances, this Spider-Man is an exceptional addition to any collection. Let's dive in, shall we?

Accessories: 10/10

Mezco always does an incredible job of including a fantastic variety of accessories. This is certainly true here as The Amazing Spider-Man comes with:

Five different head sculpts: One masked head with light-up eyes, two masked heads with different eye expressions, an unmasked Peter Parker head, a half-mask/half-unmasked face with glasses which helped to represent his Spider-Sense back in the 60's.

The light-up eyes feature is particularly nice, though it's worth mentioning that the light is bright enough to illuminate much of the head. I may add some black paint inside the head to help reduce the excessive glow. An impressive total of 18 interchangeable hands are included, offering a wide range of posing options:

Fists

Web-shooting hands: I really appreciate the fact that on the thwipping hands, they cut a small notch so that the loop on the webline sits snugly in his hand and the line itself looks to be coming from his webshooter as illustrated here.

Appearance: 9.5/10

The Mezco One:12 Collective: The Amazing Spider-Man figure's appearance is a faithful representation of the classic Spider-Man costume, with both strengths and weaknesses in its execution.

The figure's costume is made of a fitted cloth material that closely adheres to the body, creating a sleek silhouette reminiscent of Spider-Man's comic book appearance. The iconic spider insignia is accurately reproduced on both the front and back of the suit. The red areas of the costume feature vinyl overlays with intricate webbing patterns, adding depth and texture to the design while maintaining flexibility for posing.

One of the standout features is the variety of head sculpts. The figure comes with five different portraits, including two masked versions with varying eye expressions, an unmasked Peter Parker head, a Spider-Sense (light up eyes) head, and a unique half-mask look with glasses. The masked heads capture the classic Ditko-style Spider-Man look, with expressive eyes that convey emotion even through the mask.

However, the figure's appearance is not without its flaws. The most significant issue is the visible stitching on the lower back of the costume. This stitching creates an unsightly break in the otherwise seamless suit design, detracting from the overall aesthetic. The stitching is particularly noticeable due to its placement and the contrast it creates against the blue fabric of the suit.

While the front of the costume maintains a clean, comic-accurate look, the back stitching issue is a notable drawback that may disappoint some collectors. It's an unfortunate design choice that mars an otherwise excellent representation of the character. Despite this drawback, the figure's overall appearance remains impressive, particularly when viewed from the front or displayed in dynamic poses that minimize the visibility of the back stitching. The quality of the costume material, the accuracy of the spider emblem and web patterns, and the variety of expressive head sculpts still make this a visually striking representation of the Amazing Spider-Man.

Articulation: 8.5/10

The One:12 Collective body boasts over 32 points of articulation, according to the official toy description. This high degree of poseability, combined with the variety of interchangeable hands and web accessories, allows for dynamic and character-appropriate poses.

  • Head: Full 360-degree rotation and the ability to look up and down

  • Neck: Separate joint from the head, allowing for minimal additional tilt and pivot

  • Shoulders: Wide range of motion, including rotation (limited by the cloth costume) and decent T posing. Though, you won't want to keep this pose for any length of time, due to potentially damaging the costume.

  • Bicep: Rotation at the bicep is decent but also limited by the suit.

  • Elbows: Double-jointed, enabling a deep bend for web-shooting poses

  • Wrists: Rotation and hinge movement for expressive hand poses

  • Torso: Mid-torso joint allowing for twisting and some forward/backward motion.

  • Ab Crunch: Limited compared to some other figures, restricting extreme bending at the waist.

  • Hips: Wide range of motion for leg splits and high kicks.

  • Knees: Double-jointed, allowing for deep squatting poses

  • Boot Cut: Rotation at the boot helps with posing but is hindered by the ankle limitations.

  • Ankles: Hinged with some up and down motion, but limited side-to-side tilt

The figure's cloth costume enhances the overall range of motion by not restricting the articulation points. However, the limited ab crunch may hinder some classic Spider-Man poses that require extreme torso flexibility. The ankle articulation, while allowing for up and down movement, has restricted side-to-side tilt, which might affect the stability in wide-legged stances or wall-crawling poses. Despite these minor limitations, the overall articulation of the figure is decent, providing a wide range of posing options that capture Spider-Man's agility and acrobatic nature.

Affordability: 8/10

The Mezco One:12 Collective: The Amazing Spider-Man Action Figure retails at $120 and is available here: BBTS. As mentioned, I was able to find mine on sale on Amazon. I assume it may still be on sale, but there were a limited number remaining when I bought mine. For Mezco, this is a fitting price range though, especially given the quality of the figure and sheer number of accessories packed as well.

Overall, the Mezco One:12 Collective: The Amazing Spider-Man is an exceptional action figure that will appeal to avid collectors and Spider-Man fans. Its strengths lie in its impressive array of accessories, high articulation, and generally excellent appearance. The innovative web accessories and multiple head sculpts offer great display and play value.

The main drawbacks are the visible stitching on the back and the potentially high price point. However, these are minor concerns when weighed against the figure's numerous positive attributes. This earns the web-slinger a solid:
