The McFarlane Toys Batman Forever: Batman (Sonar Suit) Action Figure is an impressive addition to any DC Multiverse collection, particularly for fans of the 1995 film. This 7-inch scale figure captures the essence of Val Kilmer's portrayal of the Caped Crusader in his iconic sonar suit
ACCESSORIES: 8.5/10
The accessories included with this figure are a standout feature:
Batarangs: The figure comes with two types of Batarangs - a standard one and a sonar version. This attention to detail is commendable, as it reflects the technology upgrade Batman receives in the film
Grapnel Launcher: A sizeable grapnel launcher is included, which is an essential tool in Batman's arsenal. This accessory adds play value and display options
Extra Hands: The figure includes two additional hands, allowing for more posing possibilities and the ability to hold the various accessories
Display Base: A display base is provided, which is always appreciated for stability and presentation
Collectible Art Card: The inclusion of an art card with character artwork on the front and biography on the back adds a nice collectible touch
Build-a-Figure Piece
An exciting bonus is the inclusion of one of four pieces that, when combined with other figures from the Batman Forever line, assembles the Nightmare Bat. This adds extra value and encourages collectors to complete the set.
The variety and film accuracy of the accessories are impressive, especially the inclusion of both standard and sonar Batarangs. The grapnel launcher and extra hands provide great display options. The build-a-figure piece is a clever addition that adds value. The only minor drawbacks are the lack of a cloth cape, which some collectors prefer for more dynamic posing, and the absence of any larger accessories or diorama pieces. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise excellent package.Overall, the McFarlane Toys Batman Forever: Batman (Sonar Suit) Action Figure offers a great selection of accessories that enhance both its play value and display potential, making it a worthy addition to any Batman collection.
APPEARANCE: 8/10
The figure's suit is a faithful recreation of the movie costume, featuring a sleek, metallic silver-blue finish that accurately represents the sonar technology. The sculpted muscle definition and armor plating are well-executed, giving the figure a powerful and imposing presence. The Batman cowl is expertly crafted, with sharp, angular features that match the movie's aesthetic. The exposed lower face captures Val Kilmer's likeness reasonably well, considering the scale. The figure comes with a cloth cape, which adds a touch of realism and allows for more dynamic posing. However, it's worth noting that the cape lacks wires, which limits its ability to hold dramatic poses. This may disappoint some collectors who prefer more poseable capes. Upon closer inspection, there are some noticeable areas of damage on the right bicep of the figure. This appears to be a manufacturing flaw rather than an intentional battle-damage effect. The damage slightly detracts from the overall pristine appearance of the suit and may be a point of concern for collectors seeking perfection. The paint application is generally well-done, with a good balance of metallic sheen and matte finishes that bring out the suit's details. The silver-blue color is consistent throughout, with subtle variations that enhance the suit's technological appearance.
The figure's proportions are well-balanced, accurately representing Batman's imposing physique. The default stance is heroic and commanding, showcasing the figure's potential for dynamic poses. The high score is justified by the overall excellent sculpt, movie-accurate details, and impressive paint application. The inclusion of a cloth cape is a plus, although the lack of wires slightly limits its potential. The score is not higher due to two main factors:
The damage on the right bicep, which impacts the figure's overall aesthetic quality.
The non-wired cape, which, while still a good addition, doesn't allow for the most dynamic posing options.
Despite these minor issues, the figure remains a visually impressive representation of the Batman Forever Sonar Suit, sure to please fans of the film and Batman collectors alike.
ARTICULATION: 7.5/10
As I mentioned with Robin, the engineering seems to be improving over at McFarlane Toys. Batman's range is about the same as Robin has, so we'll just do a quick rundown:
Head: Range of motion is decent; head can turn side to side with ease and look both up and down.
Shoulders: Ball joints with good range of motion, including full 360-degree rotation.
Biceps: Swivel cuts for arm rotation.
Elbows: Double-jointed with better than 90-degree bend.
Wrists: Swivel-hinge joints for multiple hand positions.
Torso: Ab crunch and waist swivel for upper body movement. The lower joint does help with crunch, but forward is still fairly limited. Backward crunch and side tilting is very nice on this figure and the rotation is excellent.
Hips: Ball joints allowing for wide stances and kicking poses. The diaper tends to restrict a bit, but thankfully, reverts back to form when the leg is in a neutral position.
Thighs: No cuts, limits range of rotation.
Knees: Double-jointed for deep bends.
Ankles: Hinge and rocker joints for stable footing in various poses.
Toe hinge, with sturdy motion.
The range of motion in most joints is commendable, allowing for a variety of dynamic poses.
I would say that of the articulation, the following are some of the strengths of the figure:
The double-jointed knees are a highlight, enabling deep crouches and action stances.
The ball-jointed head allows for expressive poses, enhancing the figure's personality.
The ankle rockers provide excellent stability for wide-legged stances.
Despite some limitations, the figure can achieve many classic Batman poses, including:
Heroic standing poses
Crouching gargoyle-like poses
Running and jumping stances
Basic fighting poses
However, some more extreme action poses might be challenging due to the limitations at his hips. Overall, though, once again I find myself surprised and impressed with what McFarlane is doing now.
AFFORDABILITY: 8/10
When evaluating the affordability of the McFarlane Toys Batman Forever: Batman (Sonar Suit) Action Figure, several factors come into play, including the price point, value for money, and comparison with similar figures in the market.
The figure typically retails around $24.99 depending on the retailer and any ongoing promotions. I got mine on BBTS for $25.99. This price range is standard for high-quality action figures, especially those with detailed designs and multiple accessories.
Considering the figure's features—such as:
A variety of accessories including Batarangs and a grapnel launcher
The inclusion of a build-a-figure piece that adds extra value
The overall package offers good value for collectors. The detail and articulation justify the price, making it a competitive option in the action figure market.
When compared to other figures in the same scale and quality range, such as those from Marvel Legends or other DC Multiverse figures, this Batman figure holds its ground. Many comparable figures often retail for similar prices but may not include as many accessories or articulation points.
The figure is widely available through various retailers like Amazon, GameStop, and McFarlane's official store, making it accessible for most collectors. Additionally, many retailers offer free returns, which adds an extra layer of convenience.
Overall, aside from the issues with the right arm, I'm fairly pleased with this Batman figure. I am enjoying having it displayed alongside Robin from this wave and like how it looks on my shelves. I thought about getting Two Face and The Riddler, but don't know if I'm interested enough in adding those to my collection. With that said, I'm pleased to give the McFarlane Toys Batman Forever: Batman (Sonar Suit) Action Figure a solid:
