Welcome to another Dan's ToyBox review! As we continue to add to the G.I. Joe display, this time we're looking at the Hasbro Retro Series Recondo action figure. As the Joe's resident Jungle Trooper, Recondo thrives on missions that take him into his favorite element. What I'm enjoying most though, is how seamlessly the Retro series figures fit in with the Classifieds. Even though we're getting old school style with the Retro, they hold their look with the more modern versions.
Daniel M. LeClaire, known as Recondo, holds the rank of Corporal E-4. Born in Wheaton, Wisconsin, his primary military specialty is infantry, with intelligence as his secondary specialty. He served as a Cadre member at the Jungle Warfare Training Center. Recondo has a strong preference for the jungle over cold climates. In fact, regardless of what jungle he happens to be in, he feels that it belongs to him and anybody else is trespassing. His expertise includes proficiency with the M-16, Swedish K, grease gun, M-1911A1 Auto Pistol, and the M-79 grenade launcher. He first appeared in action figure form in 1984
and his comic debut was in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #32 (February 1985), where he faced nothing more challenging than helping with preparations for a party celebrating the renovation of G.I. Joe headquarters.
The G.I. Joe Retro Series has been a nostalgic delight for collectors and fans of the classic toy line. Today, we dive into the Recondo action figure, a jungle trooper known for his expertise in tropical environments. Let's discuss the Hasbro G.I. Joe Retro Series Recondo action figure!
Accessories: 9/10
Recondo comes well-equipped for jungle warfare with a range of accessories that add significant value to the figure: Removable Jungle Trooper Hat: This hat is a perfect fit, staying securely in place while adding to Recondo's signature look. The detailing on the hat, including the texture and paint application, is impressive. My biggest gripe with the hat is how easily it falls off his head. I wish it had a better fit, but what can you do? Backpack: The backpack is detailed with straps and compartments, making it look functional and realistic. It fits snugly on Recondo's back and doesn't hinder articulation. Pistol: The pistol is small but well-sculpted, fitting perfectly into Recondo's hand and the holster on his leg. Rifle: The rifle is a standout accessory with fine detailing and paint applications that bring it to life. It's appropriately scaled and looks great in various poses. Machete: The machete is another excellent addition, fitting securely into the sheath on Recondo's leg. The blade has a sharp, metallic paint finish that looks realistic. Lastly, he comes with the black figure stand, with the sculpted G.I. Joe logo.
The only minor drawback is the lack of paint applications on some accessories, which could have enhanced their realism even further. However, the overall selection and quality are top-notch.
Appearance: 8/10
Recondo's appearance stays true to his classic look while benefiting from modern sculpting techniques. The head sculpt captures Recondo's rugged, determined expression. The mustache and facial features are well-defined, adding personality to the figure. His jungle camouflage uniform is well-painted with crisp lines and no noticeable paint bleed. The color palette is realistic as we'd expect for his jungle trooper role. The body sculpt is muscular and proportionate, reflecting a soldier's physique. The sculpted details on the uniform, such as pockets, straps, and folds, add depth and realism. As mentioned in the Accessories portion, a bit more paint detail on the pouches, straps, belt, and holster/sheath would break up the dull monotony of the dark brown. Even some weathering would have given a more realistic appearance.
Articulation: 7/10
Recondo boasts a decent range of articulation, allowing for a variety of poses and action stances. Let me know if you like this new format:
Head: The head moves smoothly with a good range of motion, allowing for expressive tilts and turns. It can look down, thanks to a neck joint but upward range seems to be a bit limited.
Arms: The arms feature standard shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints. The shoulders can raise to above a T pose and rotate a full 360 degrees, even with the harness on his torso. He does have butterfly joints, which are limited in range. The bicep swivel is is hidden in the rolled-up sleeve fold and works fine. His elbows can bend in very deep, though the forearm joints need a bit of loosening. The wrists turn and hinge without issue.
Torso: The torso articulation allows for forward and backward movement, even with the backpack in place. The hinge isn't hindered by his shoulder holster harness either, which makes for easy posing. The waist swivels and isn't hindered by the belt piece.
Legs: The legs have good articulation at the hips, knees, and ankles, enabling stable, dynamic poses. Recondo can hit a great split, kick forward very high and has upper thigh cuts, deep bending knees and a boot cut. The ankles are a bit tight but will hinge and pivot. The machete sheath can occasionally hinder leg movement, especially if the machete is stored there.
While the articulation is generally satisfactory, the butterfly joints and the few tight joints can be problematic.
Affordability: 8/10
Priced reasonably within the mid-range for collectible action figures, Recondo offers great value for the money. I found mine at Walmart for $24.99. The figure's detailed accessories, solid construction, and nostalgic appeal make it a worthwhile addition to any G.I. Joe collection. Compared to other figures in the same price range, Recondo provides a satisfying balance of quality and affordability.
Overall, The Hasbro G.I. Joe Retro Series Recondo action figure is a commendable addition to the Retro Series lineup. With well-chosen accessories, a faithful and detailed appearance, decent articulation, and reasonable pricing, this figure successfully captures the essence of the classic Recondo character. With that, I'm comfortable giving the figure a solid:
8 out of 10 ToyBoxes
While there are minor areas for improvement, particularly in articulation and paint precision, the overall package is impressive. Recondo stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of the G.I. Joe franchise and is sure to delight both longtime fans and new collectors. Thank you!!! Until next time... GEEK OUT!!!
