A Beginner's Guide to Collecting Part Three: 5 Common Collecting Mistakes

Collecting toys can be an incredibly rewarding hobby. Whether you're passionate about vintage action figures, rare dolls, or limited-edition toys, building a collection can bring joy and nostalgia into your life. However, there are pitfalls that many collectors fall into, which can detract from the enjoyment of the hobby and even diminish the value of their collections. In this article, we'll explore the five worst things someone can do when collecting toys and offer tips on how to avoid these common mistakes.

  1. Neglecting Research: One of the biggest mistakes novice collectors make is diving into collecting without doing proper research. It's crucial to educate yourself about the toys you're interested in collecting, including their history, variations, and market value. Without this knowledge, you may end up overpaying for common items or missing out on valuable pieces. Take the time to read books, join online forums, and attend collector events to expand your understanding of the hobby.

  2. Ignoring Condition: The condition of a toy greatly affects its value to collectors. Some enthusiasts prioritize mint-condition items, while others are willing to accept minor wear and tear. However, neglecting to assess the condition of a toy altogether can lead to disappointment and financial loss. Always examine items closely before purchasing, paying attention to factors such as paint wear, discoloration, and missing accessories. Additionally, be wary of sellers who conceal damage or misrepresent the condition of their items.

  3. Focusing Solely on Profit: While it's natural to want your collection to increase in value over time, fixating solely on profit can detract from the joy of collecting. Viewing toys purely as investments may lead to overlooking items you genuinely love in favor of those with the highest potential for financial gain. Remember that collecting should be a passion-driven endeavor first and foremost. Instead of solely focusing on monetary value, prioritize acquiring items that bring you happiness and nostalgia.

  4. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Buying: One of the worst mistakes a new collector can make is buying something out of the fear of missing out or buying something just for the sake of getting it. So often, there are figures that are hyped up a lot and, in the rush to get them, collectors sometimes are thinking more about not missing out rather than is this a figure they really want or need. Buying out of fear or just for the sake of buying is a great way to hurt your wallet and, even, damage your collection. I say damage because if you are a collector with a specific focus, adding too many of these "hot commodities" because everyone else is, will ultimately detract from the look and enjoyment of the hobby. When chasing hard to find figures becomes more important than the joy you feel from collecting, it's time to reevaluate why you're collecting. I've been told I really need to drop reviews sooner and get out ahead of the other well-known reviewers in the community. However, for me, collecting and writing reviews isn't about becoming the best reviewer or most popular. I do this because I genuinely enjoy it and want to provide information to help other collectors choose what they want to spend their money on. Collect because you want it, not because you don't want to be the last person on the block to have it.

  5. Isolating Yourself from the Community: Collecting toys is much more enjoyable when shared with others who share your passion. However, some collectors make the mistake of isolating themselves from the broader community. Engaging with fellow collectors through online forums, social media groups, and local meetups can provide valuable insights, trading opportunities, and friendships. Don't hesitate to reach out to others for advice, collaboration, or simply to share your latest acquisitions. Building connections within the collecting community can enrich your hobby experience and enhance your knowledge.

Collecting toys can be a fulfilling and enriching hobby, but it's essential to avoid common pitfalls that can detract from the enjoyment and value of your collection. By conducting thorough research, prioritizing condition, collecting for passion rather than profit, properly storing and displaying your items, and engaging with the collecting community, you can enhance your collecting experience and build a collection you're proud of. Happy collecting, until next time... GEEK OUT!!!
